Mumbai, India
Driving through the city is never dull. It's one of the only places that I've visited where getting somewhere becomes an adventure. The combination of people, cars, two / three wheelers, trucks, carts and animals creates this chaotic (but wonderful) layer to the society. It simply buzzes with life.
Here you can see a slum development that has started building on top of itself. Its actually going vertical due to the land constraints. Just amazing to see how people adapt to the changing city - the level of improvisation is truly amazing.
The village of Cha looks like all the villages of Zanskar. The houses are built of earth on a foundation of stones, flat roofs greet yak dung of cows and dzos used as fuel for cooking and heating. It is women who collect them all the day in baskets on their back.
Herbs with beautiful colors ochres, red and green add color on the roofs of houses ...
Unfortunately nobody was home when I took this photograph, but this makeshift home belonged to a local Sadhu or Holy Man living the renounced life. He is obviously like a lot of Sadhus in Rishikesh a devotee of Lord Shiva. There is a photograph left on display in the top right depicting Lord Shiva and his eternal Consort Parvati. I particularly like his Patio (Crazy Pavin').
What you can't tell from this photograph is that this shelter is overlooking the River Ganges at the foothill of the Himalayas. I was standing on the rocky and sandy riverbank taking this photo.
